Taking GCSEs as a private candidate

Home-educated pupils register through an approved exam centre, not directly with the exam board. Start early: centres choose which subjects they accept, set their own deadlines and fees, and may not offer every practical, spoken or non-exam assessment.

Before choosing a course: confirm that a centre can enter the exact specification and complete every assessment requirement. Finding a centre after studying a course can be difficult.

How to enter

1. Choose the exact qualification

Write down the subject, awarding organisation, specification code, tier and exam series. GCSE and International GCSE are different qualifications. Check that the chosen specification accepts private candidates and whether it includes spoken, practical or non-exam assessment.

2. Find an approved centre

Use the JCQ private-candidate search by postcode, GCSE, awarding organisation and subject. Contact several centres: the list is updated annually, not every listed centre will still have capacity, and another approved centre may accept candidates without appearing.

3. Ask for a complete written quote

Confirm the exam entry, administration, invigilation, speaking test, practical or NEA handling, access-arrangement assessment, late fees, results, certificate postage and post-results charges. Ask for the centre's internal deadline, which can be earlier than the awarding organisation deadline.

4. Register through the centre

The pupil does not enter directly with an awarding organisation. The centre makes the entry. Provide the requested identity and previous-candidate details, pay the centre, then check the statement of entry for names, subject codes, tier and papers.

5. Arrange support early

Discuss extra time, a reader, scribe or other access arrangements before entry. The centre is responsible for evidence and approval. Also confirm how any spoken language, practical, fieldwork, coursework or NEA requirement will be completed and authenticated.

Mainstream written GCSE: About £200–£300 per subject
Modern foreign language: About £300 where speaking is included
Combined Science: About £375–£425 for the six-paper qualification
Late entry: Often £60 or more extra per subject, rising at later stages

These are examples, not fixed national prices. They are based on public 2026 price lists from independent English centres, including Excel Exam Centres and Ark Education. A centre’s price includes its own administration and invigilation as well as awarding-organisation charges, so quotations vary by location, subject, assessment requirements and date. Tuition and course materials are normally separate.
